IMMERSING INTO THE SPED PROGRAM

How can I deny a task that is so close to my heart?

Yes! I got the chance to immerse myself in the SPED curriculum...So blessed!!! Where learning knows no bounds....

In the wake of typhoon Glenda, I chose to be in Tagaytay to attend a seminar on the updates regarding the Secondary SPED Program. Amidst the pines trees that fell and the whooshing wind, we pushed through with the seminar. It was an eye- opener for me. I just could not help myself but be awed at the wonderful chance to cater to the needs of children with special needs.

I am ecstatic!

The journey will be magical. I know.

We Build This City

LIPUNAN, translated in the English language is SOCIETY. This has been the lesson that I have to teach to my students in their EsP class. To be honest, I find this topic boring and overrated. 

I had my qualms delivering the lesson to a class of bright students. I thought it would be drab if I have to stick with what's already in their modules. My students might not be responsive.

And so, I have to rack my brain and come up with something out of the ordinary- a worthwhile and at the same time, value- laden output. And voila!!!! I came up with this "We build this city-DIORAMA!" 

My students were very much into this.They pooled out their creative juices and really worked together embodying the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity, the primary goals of making the diorama. 

And as I quipped from them, through this diorama they became one with their own group. And they have faced the hurdles of building their own cities. Indeed, it is a big task. But through their collaborative effort, they were able to see the analogy of themselves to the real outside world.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE ONLINE

With the advent of technology, a lot of terminologies are added to the lexicon such as digital natives, selfies, digital culture, digital immigrants, social media, tweet, google, blogging, etc. As our words evolve and our word bank increase, so does our youth change.

Such overwhelming INTERNET REVOLUTION now presents a wide generational gap between the old and the young. But this is not the only problem. Our youth are vulnerable to a lot of cyber addictions and cyber distractions, more than we can imagine.

It is not pure chance that I got to sit for 2 hours to listen to Sir Sonnie Santos' talk on "Keeping Kids Safe Online."

I'm glad I went to this seminar as I was able to learn a lot even if the lecture was short.

As Sir Sonnie emphasized in his lecture, the use of the Internet is like a double edged sword.If properly used, the pool of knowledge and information that one could get from the World Wide Web could be beneficial and "transformational" to the user. However, if abused, the Internet is the harbinger of lots of addiction to the user.

The main purpose of social media should be to add value to a person. But it could be overwhelming to the youth as the youth lacks the capacity to really weigh its pros and cons. More often than not, the youth are inclined to be easily susceptible to  its influences. 

Ensuring web safety for our youth then becomes everybody's business. Parents, educators, media, legislators, NGO's, LGU's, no one is spared of the big responsibility to safeguard the young. 

I join Sonnie Santos in his advocacy against cyberbullying and web safety.

·         Differentiated instruction is a systematic approach to planning curriculum and instruction for academically diverse learners… with the goals of honouring each student’s learning needs and maximizing each student’s learning capacity.

·         In DI, a teacher proactively plans varied approaches to what students need to learn, how they will learn it and how they will express what they have learned in order to increase the likelihood that each student will learn  as  much as he can as efficiently as possible. 

·         The goals of differentiation are:

1.Every student will make continuous progress no matter how old  she is or what levels  her knowledge and skills are  as she begins the unit.

2. Every student will become  a lifelong learner.

Differentiated classrooms feel right to students who learn in different ways and at different rates and who bring to school different talents and interests.

·         DI is permitting students to opt out of material they already know and progress at their own pace through new material.

·         The  first step in making your classroom a DI class is to do a formative assessment  to create an individual profile of every student in the class. Assessment should be on-going and diagnostic to provide data on readiness for particular skills. 

·         In DI teachers modify the content, process or product along with the learning area.
